a case of ( retrograde ) Amnesia

Jacques-Michel Huret :  French architect, he attended the "Beaux-Arts" in Nancy.

In 1987, he was victim of amnesia. Thanks to his family and his friend, Charlélie Couture (singer and painter), he could slowly recover his composure. In 2013, he published a book titled:
"I have forgotten 30 years of my life".

 case details :

- June 21, 1987, Jouy-aux-Arches, a suburb of Metz in Lorraine, 20 h 30, the  Huret couple is ensconced in the family living room. Jacques Huret set out to park his car in the garage. This is the last time he passes the front door of his home. He suddenly disappears...

The police, alerted by the next morning, organize a systematic search of the area. In vain. Grief befalls his wife Martine and their two children, Sandrine and Pierre-Henry. Two months later, all three move and begin a new life ...

Meanwhile, June 28, 1987, Paris, Seine, around 1 am, the security forces apprehend a homeless vagrant, assault on officer, and attempted escape. No documentation, it does not want or can not identify himself. Its incoherent, despite a negative test ethyl, trigger a compulsory admission procedure. Thus Jacques Huret, completely amnesiac, is taken to hospital Sainte-Anne, where it will invest, under the name of Mr. X, psychiatric services for over a year...

- The town of Nancy, one evening in 1987. Jacques-Michel Huret set out to park his car and disappeared for 6 months. The police find him without identity papers, on a park bench in Paris. His unique words are: ''I don’t know who I am.”

In the psychiatric hospital, under narcosis, the only piece of information recuperated was a first name: “Charlélie”. When Charlélie Couture, a famous singer, is asked, he vaguely remembers his friend from fine Arts Academy and gives some clues that allow Jacques-Michel Huret to find his family. But he does not recognize anybody. Neither his parents, nor his wife and children: a 6 year-old daughter and a little boy that was a year and half. The only thing he says is that his wife is pretty and that he must have had good taste!

The two of them recount throughout the pages of this book their long struggle to recover the landmarks of their life. But, despite all the love and optimism of his wife, the past remains for Jacques-Michel obstinately dumb...

Jacques - Michel Huret : I forgot 30 years of my life.

Amnesia (from Greek ἀμνησία from ἀ- meaning "without" and μνήμη memory) is a deficit in memory caused by brain damage, disease, or psychological trauma. Amnesia can also be caused temporarily by the use of various sedatives and hypnotic drugs. Essentially, amnesia is loss of memory. The memory can be either wholly or partially lost due to the extent of damage that was caused. There are two main types of amnesia: retrograde amnesia and anterograde amnesia.
Retrograde amnesia is the inability to retrieve information that was acquired before a particular date, usually the date of an accident or operation. In some cases the memory loss can extend back decades, while in others the person may lose only a few months of memory. Anterograde amnesia is the inability to transfer new information from the short-term store into the long-term store. People with this type of amnesia cannot remember things for long periods of time. These two types are not mutually exclusive. Both can occur within a patient at one time.

sourcewikipedia : Amnesia

Retrograde Amnesia

Retrograde amnesia is a form of amnesia where someone is unable to recall events that occurred before the development of the amnesia, even though they may be able to encode and memorize new things that occur after the onset.

Retrograde amnesia usually follows damage to areas of the brain other than the hippocampus (the part of the brain involved in encoding new memories), because already exisiting long-term memories are stored in the neurons and synapses of various different brain regions...
Retrograde amnesia is often temporally graded, meaning that remote memories are more easily accessible than events occurring just prior to the trauma (sometimes known as Ribot's Law after the 19th Century psychologist Théodule-Armand Ribot), and the events nearest in time to the event that caused the memory loss may never be recovered. This is because the neural pathways of newer memories are not as strong as older ones that have been strengthened by years of retrieval and re-consolidation. While there is no actual cure for retrograde amnesia, “jogging” the victim’s memory by exposing them to significant articles from their past will often speed the rate of recall.

Larry Hagman's case : Cirrhosis and Cancer of the Liver - ( successful ) Liver transplant surgery

Larry Martin Hagman (born September 21, 1931) is an American film and television actor, producer and director most widely known for playing J. R. Ewing in the 1980s primetime television soap opera Dallas, which continued in a 2012 version of Dallas....

On June 3, 1992 Hagman was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver.   On June 22, 1994, two years later doctors informed Hagman that he had a cancerous tumor on his liver. Hagman received his liver transplant surgery after pre-op at 7:30 PM August 22, 1995 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in LA...

Actor Larry Hagman was in critical condition Wednesday after receiving a liver transplant, but his surgeon gave the former "Dallas" star a good prognosis.
After performing 15 hours of surgery, Dr. Leonard Makowka said that he discovered Hagman's cirrhosis was more advanced than thought, but that a cancerous tumor threatening his liver was halted by a special procedure in which doctors stopped blood flow to the area

source : Hagman's Prognosis Good After Liver Transplant

...I Hagman underwent a life-saving liver transplant after admitting he had been a heavy drinker. Numerous reports state he was drinking four bottles of champagne a day while on the set of Dallas.

"The first intoxication of two drinks. It's the same with grass. But there's never anything as good as that again! Yet I'd averaged about four bottles a day for 15 years. Then come home and have a couple of vodkas and orange juice and a bottle of wine. That's the pattern I fell into."
Until June 3, 1992. "When my doctor phoned just before dinner, said I had cirrhosis of the liver and might die if I continued drinking. At 6:15pm I poured my vodka and orange down the drain and haven't had a drink since. And, speaking of money, I've saved $60,000 a year by not drinking!"
The morning after he stopped drinking Larry also realised that feeling good was a big rush. Three years later he joined AA "just before my liver operation" and still attends every week.

source : Larry's game is not over yet

He was also a heavy smoker as a young man, but the cancer scare was the catalyst for him to quit. Hagman was so shaken by this incident that he immediately became strongly anti-smoking. He has recorded several public service announcements pleading with smokers to quit and urging non-smokers never to start

Cirrhosis  is a consequence of chronic liver disease characterized by replacement of liver tissue by fibrosis, scar tissue and regenerative nodules (lumps that occur as a result of a process in which damaged tissue is regenerated), leading to loss of liver function. Cirrhosis is most commonly caused by alcoholism, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and fatty liver disease, but has many other possible causes. Some cases are idiopathic (i.e., of unknown cause).

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Alcoholic cirrhosis develops for between 10% and 20% of individuals who drink heavily for a decade or more. Alcohol seems to injure the liver by blocking the normal metabolism of protein, fats, and carbohydrates. Patients may also have concurrent alcoholic hepatitis with fever, hepatomegaly, jaundice, and anorexia. Liver biopsy may show hepatocyte necrosis, Mallory bodies, neutrophilic infiltration with perivenular inflammation.

Liver transplantation or hepatic transplantation is the replacement of a diseased liver with a healthy liver allograft. The most commonly used technique is orthotopic transplantation, in which the native liver is removed and replaced by the donor organ in the same anatomic location as the original liver. Liver transplantation nowadays is a well accepted treatment option for end-stage liver disease and acute liver failure. Typically three surgeons and two anesthesiologists are involved, with up to four supporting nurses. The surgical procedure is very demanding and ranges from 4 to 18 hours depending on outcome. Numerous anastomoses and sutures, and many disconnections and reconnections of abdominal and hepatic tissue, must be made for the transplant to succeed, requiring an eligible recipient and a well-calibrated live or cadaveric donor match. By any standard, hepatic transplantation is a major surgical procedure with an appreciable degree of risk...

Audrey Santo's case : Accident : near drowning - Akinetic mutism - ( religious nature ) Paranormal Phenomena

Audrey Marie Santo (December 19, 1983 - April 14, 2007), often referred to as Little Audrey by pilgrims to her home, was an American young woman from Worcester, Massachusetts through whom miracles were said to have happened during her lifetime.

On August 9, 1987, when Audrey was three years old (while playing in the driveway with Stephen, her brother), she fell into the family swimming pool. Audrey recovered but was rushed to the hospital, remaining in a coma for about three weeks, in intensive care with 24-hour attention. When she awoke from the coma, she remained in a state called Akinetic Mutism — non-speaking and limited movement (unable to move except for fingers and eyes). Her family was recommended to place her in an institution. Audrey’s mother Linda, felt that she would receive better care being home with her family. In November, four months following the accident, Audrey was brought home...

Audrey's parents claimed miracles in the home including icons weeping blood or oil, a bleeding statue of Jesus, consecrated hosts bleeding, blood appearing spontaneously in a tabernacle, oil dripping down the walls of the garage, and the Virgin Mary appearing in cloud formations overhead

...Audrey Santo died from cardio-respiratory failure on April 14, 2007 in her home. Family, friends, and clergy were at her side...

Near drowning is the survival of a drowning event involving unconsciousness or water inhalation and can lead to serious secondary complications, including death, after the event.

Akinetic mutism: Damage to parts of the brain (e.g. demyelinization and hydrocephalus) which results in a person being unable to talk or move despite the fact that they appear alert at times.

The list of signs and symptoms mentioned in various sources for Akinetic mutism includes the 4 symptoms listed below:

Bocelli, Andrea ( Italian singer / blindness )

Andrea Bocelli, (born 22 September 1958) is an Italian tenor, multi-instrumentalist and classical crossover artist.

As a young boy, Bocelli showed a great passion for music. His mother has said that music was the only thing that would comfort him. At the age of six, he started piano lessons, and later also learned to play the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, harp, guitar and drums. Bocelli would also spend time singing during his childhood...

...With the exception of the negative views of some Classical music critics, Bocelli is widely celebrated as a singer and is admired around the world. His voice's timbre is as recognisable as a signature, with a versatility ranging from the Bel canto to the furore of Verismo, from the sacred repertoire to popular ballads...

Loss of sight

It was evident at birth that Bocelli had problems with his sight, and after visits to many doctors, he was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma. In 1970, at the age of 12, he lost his sight completely following an accident during a football game. He was accidentally hit on the head during a match and suffered a brain haemorrhage. Doctors resorted to leeches in a desperate last-ditch effort to save his sight, but they were unsuccessful, and he remained blind...
